Drow society, chaotic as it is, still has laws. Unspoken rules that only the brave, stupid, or extremely desperate attempt to break, for the penalty is one arguably worse than death.
Contrary to popular belief, driders are not allied with the drow. They are exiles, punished for the crime of insulting Lolth with a monstrous form, cast into the deepest corners of the Underdark and forbidden to ever return, on pain of death.
Veszrae is one such drider, upper half belonging to a fairly normal-looking male drow, ebony skin with white hair that, for lack of opportunity to cut it, has grown long. There are a few visible scars on his torso, remnants of his 'punishment'. And below the waist... well. Any similarity with humanoid creatures ends. His lower half is eight-legged, an arachnid's body with chitinous armor covered in short, dull brown hairs. If questioned about this unusual facet of his appearance, his response usually tends towards avoiding the question.
This particular drider seems to have escaped the tunnels, making his way to the surface, if only because he couldn't stand being trapped underground any longer. He found that his new appearance made him
extraordinarily unpopular around settlements, and for that reason he's largely hidden himself away in the wilderness, somewhere he's unlikely to be spotted. As for why he's here... as varied as this crowd is, one more monster isn't going to be noticed, right?
