What would you do for immortality? If it cost money or lives, would you pay it no matter the cost? Let us presume for a moment your scientists find a way to make such a thing happen: who then gets the treatment and how do you keep others that aren't worthy from getting it?

A simple answer for an ever growing Burmese python named Vanessa: you ensnare the best and the brightest with a hypnotic body, gaze, and a few other surprises that a lady would never share with outsiders.

After having been named the leader of a rather small group that lived in a secluded part of a beautiful rain forest by the death of her forebear, the mission of her rule became quite clear. Like the pharaohs of old and many before her she would seek a way to cheat that which stalks even the most cunning of predators. Vanessa set her smartest shaman to work and sent others out to recruit which was a polite way of saying "kidnap then hypnotize," because as all great snakes know nothing makes a slave obedient like one that wants nothing more than to serve.

Years passed and that small group hidden in the jungle grew with smarter, stronger people that all lived to please the Pythoness. Breakthroughs were made over time as shaman gave way to a more modern scientists, creatures venturing into the woods to find exotic cures found something exotic indeed and then were instructed to return to whence they came to continue their work but now with a Burmese boss. The small encampment had now grown to the size of a city that was whispered about by adventures worldwide as a place so rich and beautiful that once found, you never wanted to leave which turned out to be quite close to the truth.

Finally the deed was done and the whole population cheered, they were ready to start the process on their Queen and complete the work that had been so long in coming. The process that shall not be explained here was completed as quickly as could be expected on the now much larger serpentess who had grown quite large from her opulent life. When the procedure was done there was quite the satisfied hiss as the Queen drank in the feeling of raw and undiluted life that seemed to pour into her. The slaves were quick to resume tending their Mistress which seemed to be a harder job than before and as years passed the area around the borders of Vanessa's lands seemed to slowly be dying out.

The once sprawling jungle were turning to desert from their outer edges inward which puzzled the locals and the world equally. When Vanessa could be bothered to ask about it to one of her shaman who had descended from one that had made her immortal, he said that they had tied her energy to that of the land and all around her. Long conduits long since hidden by jungle and now sand funneled energy from far away into her chambers. The more she renewed herself or used energy to shift from her normal feral into naga or to anthro forms the faster the land would be wasted.

A minor nuisance.

After a few hundred years the once lush country surrounding her empire had now turned to unyielding wastes. Scientific minded furries came from the world over to research why this was happening which ensured her harem, workforce or her belly were ever full. She didn't even really need to eat anymore, merely coiling something was enough to drink from it as much energy she wished which the wriggling morsels never seemed to mind. She sent some to lengthen the conduits and others out into the world to bring her more servants that could perhaps one day reverse the damage; or if not, new places to find energy.

The oasis of Vanessa was still found from time to time by adventures such as an elephant gal who was instructed to set up a supply depot for others wishing to explore the mysterious wasteland. Doomed were people who wandered into the desolate sands before and now those foolish enough to venture will be well supplied and poor, then doomed.
