MUSLs are the genetically engineered, Engineers, Mechanics, Computer Technicians, etc of a an advanced space faring civilization, who decided to delegate the tasks essential for life in space, to a dedicated caste of workers. From this idea, the MUSLs were born, capable of surviving in extremes of hot and cold, and in the vacuum of space, their bodies devoid of bones and coated in a natural lubricant, they can squeeze and slither into whatever crevice needed to perform their work, repairing and maintaining the vast starships of their creators tirelessly. Usually they are coloured in bright striped patterns, to make them stand out from the machinery they work among, as is required by Workplace Health and Safety Legislation.

If course they weren't designed entirely for these purposes, sporting a hefty pair of breasts, they also entertain the crew of their vessels, ensuring that morale is maintained just as well as the mechanical workings of the Ship. Even though they lack sexual organs, a slimy night with a MUSL is still said to be a unique and pleasurable experience.

They also fill the role of intruder defence, their boneless anatomy, sticky slime, and long tongues making them capable predators, keen to devour anyone onboard who fails an identity check. Because of their hardy nature, many pirates and salvagers have met their ends attempting to loot derelict hulks, still home to forgotten MUSLs.

Their stomach is not always a fatal place to visit however, in the event of unexpected depressurization, MUSLs will swallow crew members and seal them away safely inside their bodies, keeping them safe from the lethal environment of space, until safety can be reached. They are also designed to be used as a biological space suit, their arms being hollow, so a humanoid inhabitant can reach into them like a pair of gloves, a thick membrane of slime forming a visor as their jaws part, for the pilot to view the outside world through.
